Urupukapuka Island
Urupukapuka Island is a place you must see while visiting the Bay of Islands, a beautiful island with fascinating nature and history. The largest island of all the 144 islands in the Bay, Urupukapuka Island has a long Island History, both Maori and European. Visitors to the island will discover wonderful beaches, historic & archaeological walks, snorkelling, kayak hire and more.
All of the islands of the eastern Bay of Islands (Ipipiri) are now rat-, mouse- and stoat-free, including Urupukapuka Island.
Many hours and money has been spent to get them to this stage; more will be spent in the future to keep them pest-free. Before too long the islands of the Bay will be filled with the songs of birds that once lived there. But – these islands are vulnerable to reinvasion, especially as they are within rat-swimming distance of the mainland.
Before you travel with Explore NZ to visit these beautiful islands, please take time to download and read the Stop, Check and Go pdf brochure here>> or visit the Project Island Song web site or Department of Conservation web site.
